If you’re new to the Cricut, you might have heard of shrinking T-Shirts, but never really understood how it works. It seems like a magical process where one day your super big men’s t-shirt is normal sized after a wash cycle, and the next you have a shrunken tee that looks like an undershirt.
Clean and dry the T-shirt before shrinking.
When you are ready to shrink your T-shirt, fill the bathtub with cold water and add a 1/2 cup of salt. Gently place the T-shirt in the water and let it soak for about five minutes. Remove the shirt from the water and gently squeeze out any excess water.
Lay the T-shirt on an old towel or newspaper and iron it with a dry iron on medium heat until it is dry.
Lay the shirt flat on a table and cover it with another piece of paper so that there is no chance of it getting caught on anything while being shrunken.
Use an old pair of scissors to cut off any extra fabric at the bottom of your shirt where you want it to be shorter than usual.
Turn your iron up to high heat and set it down on top of your shirt. Leave it there for 30 seconds before pulling it away to see how much smaller your shirt has become over time. If you want more shrinkage, repeat this process until desired size is achieved.
Plan out your design before you start.
Planning your design is the best way to ensure that you’re delivering the right product to your customers.
The best designs are planned out before the first line of code is written, and this holds true for web design as well. The more you know about your client, their business and what they want from the site, the easier it will be for you to come up with a concept.
Planning should include:
Assessing the current situation – What are their goals? Do they need branding or just an online presence? What’s their budget like? Do they have specific needs or wants? This step is all about getting down to brass tacks and really understanding what they’re looking for in their site so that you can work within those parameters when designing.
Researching competitors – If there are any similar sites out there already, take a look at them and see if there’s anything that stands out as being especially effective or ineffective in terms of design and functionality. You can also use tools like Google Analytics to see how people interact with certain pages on your competitor’s site to get a better idea of what works and what doesn’t when it comes to user engagement.
Keep the design simple.
You want to make sure that your site is easy to navigate, but you also don’t want to add too much clutter. If a user can’t find what they’re looking for on your website, they will leave very quickly.
Designing your website with too many images and animations can make it difficult for users to find what they need, so keep it simple.
Keep it clean and easy to read. Make sure there’s enough contrast between elements so that they’re easily distinguishable from one another. If you need more than one color, use them wisely and sparingly.
Use common sense when designing your app’s interface. Don’t put too much stuff on one screen; make sure your screens are logically organized; and make sure the user knows where they are in the app at all times by using breadcrumbs or other navigational aids.
There’s a lot more to learn about good UI design, but these basic rules will get you started on the right path.
Use a press cloth over your heat transfer vinyl to keep it from melting to the iron.
You can easily make your own heat transfer vinyl press cloth by using a piece of cotton fabric. The fabric will protect the iron from melting the vinyl and provide a soft surface for you to work with.
To make your own heat transfer vinyl press cloth, simply cut a piece of cotton fabric that is larger than your heat transfer vinyl. Place it over the top of the design, then place the heat transfer material on top of it. Press the entire stack using an iron set on medium-high.
You don’t need to use any additional wax paper or parchment paper with this method because there is no direct contact between your iron and the heat transfer vinyl itself.

Iron over your design for a few minutes.
The heat will make the fabric more pliable and easier to cut out.
When you’re done, remove the paper backing carefully, and place the stencil on your shirt with the sticky side down.
Place both hands on top of the stencil, then lift up slightly so there’s about an inch of space between your hand and shirt. Now you’re ready to trace!
Take a look at where your thumb meets your index finger; that’s where you want to start tracing. Place one hand on top of the stencil while keeping the other below it, holding down any parts that might move around while you work (like sleeves).
Now follow along with your traced line, making sure to keep your hands steady as you go along. You may need to move slowly at first but once you get used to how it feels, speed up!
You can shrink a T-shirt using an iron and heat transfer vinyl with your Cricut machine.
The Cricut Design Space software is a great tool for designing your own shirts. You can use the software to create a design, upload it to the Cricut Maker, and then use the Cricut Maker to cut out the design on the fabric of your choice.
Once you’ve got your design cut out, you’ll need to shrink it so that it fits comfortably on the shirt. Shrinking is a process that involves applying heat and pressure to an object in order to make it smaller. In this case, we’ll be shrinking our shirt using an iron and heat transfer vinyl.
