Putting on a swim cap can sometimes be difficult. Having to roll it onto your head, pinch the seams and get the goggle straps through the right holes can at times be a tricky task. This article will show you how to do it properly and simply for both butterfly and freestyle caps.
Before putting on the swim cap, wet your hair first.
Before putting on the swim cap, wet your hair first. This will make it easier to put on the swim cap, and it will help keep your hair from drying out.
Put your hair in a ponytail before you put on the swim cap. Ponytails help keep your hair out of your face while you’re swimming, and they also make it easier to put on and take off your swim cap.
Take off any jewelry or accessories before you put on the swim cap. They can get caught in the strap of your goggles or in other parts of your body during swimming.
Place the swim cap over your head so that it covers all of your hair except for small sections at each earlobe. The swim cap should be tight enough so that water doesn’t leak into it when you’re swimming, but not so tight that it hurts.[1][2]
Put a dab of conditioner on the edge of the cap and on your forehead to help slide it along better.

Step 3: Put it on your head, then pull it straight back
Put your hair into a ponytail using rubber bands or whatever you have around. Then put the shower cap over your hair and pull it back toward you as far as you can without hurting yourself.
Step 4: Tie it up with an elastic band
Secure it with an elastic band, taking care to keep the shower cap in place so that no water leaks in. If you don’t have one handy, use the aforementioned method of tying off a plastic bag first and then sliding that onto your head instead.
Hold the swim cap away from your face so it’s still open and begin pulling it over your forehead.
If you’ve never worn a swim cap before, it can be difficult to know how to put one on. Here are a few tips on how to get your swim cap on properly:
Hold the swim cap away from your face so it’s still open and begin pulling it over your forehead.
Pull the swim cap down over your ears, making sure it’s not too tight.
Pull the swim cap over the back of your head so that it rests firmly against your skull.
If you have long hair, tuck your hair into the swim cap before putting it on. It will be easier to do this with wet hair, but if you’re using a silicone cap then use dry shampoo or conditioner to help stick those stray hairs in place.
To put on a swim cap, hold the swim cap away from your face so it’s still open and begin pulling it over your forehead. Make sure that you pull it down over the back of your head, too.
You may want to try this in front of a mirror at first, so you can see what you’re doing.
Once the cap is on, make sure that it stays on! If it falls off while you’re swimming, take another quick breath and try again.
Gather up all your hair first, then pull the swim cap over your head, using a twisting motion to gradually pull it down until you get to the nape of your neck.

If you’re not sure how to put on a swim cap, check out these tips for getting it on right:
1. With your hair still dry, gather all your hair in one hand and flip it over so that it’s facing away from your face.
2. Place the swim cap over this section of hair and slowly pull it down towards the back of your head with both hands (left and right).
3. Once you’ve pulled it down over the nape of your neck, use both hands to twist the cap around so that it covers as much of your head as possible.
Keep smoothing down the edges until you have it centered on top of your head.
To smooth down the edges, take your index fingers and press down on the sides of your wig.

Smoothing Down Your Wig Edges
One of the best ways to ensure that your wig is secure, comfortable, and looks natural is by smoothing down the edges. This will also help you keep those pesky stray hairs in place!
How to Smooth Down Your Wig Edges:
Put on your wig and adjust it so that it fits securely on your head. You may want to use some bobby pins at this point if it’s not staying put very well.
Take a mirror and look at how your wig looks from behind. If any parts are sticking out or hanging low, you should use a few bobby pins to secure it in place. If there are any stray hairs sticking out of your wig, use a pair of thinning shears (if you have them) or some nail scissors to trim them off close to their roots. You don’t want them sticking out or showing through!
Keep smoothing down the edges until you have it centered on top of your head.
If you have long hair, take some out at the nape of your neck and leave it hanging out there before finishing pulling down the swim cap.

If you’ve never worn a swim cap before, start with a cheap one. After you know how to put it on, you can buy more expensive caps that fit better. The best time to try on different styles is when they’re on sale at the end of summer and beginning of fall.
Once you’ve got the right size and style, learn how to put it on properly:
Put your hair up in a ponytail first; this makes it easier to get under the swim cap.
Put your hand inside the cap and stretch it over your hand like a glove. Hold onto the end of your ponytail with one hand as you stretch it over your head with the other hand. Apply slight pressure with both hands as if trying to push the cap into shape using only your hands (but do not pull!). If needed use two fingernails through the holes in back of cap to help pull tightness over ears and head. Pull even tighter by grasping top edge of cap (where we usually have our name printed) between thumbs and index fingers then pull down hard while pushing.
