Rug making is an interesting and fun hobby that many people can enjoy. There are dozens of sites that offer tips, tricks, and tutorials on how to make a rug, but I wanted to put together something slightly different. I’ve put together a list of ten sites which collect these tutorials all in one place. If you follow them closely you’ll soon be on your way to making your very own rug.
Cut the t-shirts into strips.
Select your t-shirts and cut them into strips. You can choose to use any kind of t-shirt, but they should be old and have a lot of holes in them. If you have an old t-shirt that’s too small for you to wear anymore, that’s perfect for this project!
Cut the t-shirts into strips about 1 inch wide and 3 inches long each.
To make your own yarn, take one end of your strip and tie it around the end of a pencil or other narrow object (like a chopstick or pen). Then wind the cloth around the pencil until it becomes a tight coil. Pull off the pencil from time to time so it doesn’t get stuck in the center of your yarn ball. When you reach the end of your strip, leave about 6 inches unrolled so that you can tie off the end with another piece of fabric or string when you get there.
Do this with all the strips of fabric until you have a big pile of loose coils sitting on top of each other.
To make sure they stay together, gather them all up into one big ball and then tie off both ends with some more string or cordage (like shoelaces!).
Make a loop on the end of each strip.
Step 1:
Cut a piece of thread about three times as long as the length of the book.
Step 2:
Stick the needle on one end of the thread and tie a knot.
Step 3:
Fold the thread in half, and use a piece of tape to keep it in place. This will help keep your needle from slipping off when you’re sewing.
Step 4:
Trim one end of the paper strip so that there’s a small amount sticking out past where you want your book mark to be. This will give you something to hold onto while you’re making the loop. You may want to use your scissors or utility knife for this step since it can be difficult if you try using just your hands alone!
Tie the ends of two or more pieces together. Continue in this fashion until you have enough length to reach your desired rug size.

With a piece of chalk, mark the center point on the floor and the point where you want your rug’s corners to be. Use these points as guides for cutting and positioning your jute rug.
Using an electric knife or sharp scissors, cut out your rug’s shape from the jute pieces. Don’t worry if your cuts are rough; they’ll be hidden by knots later on.
Lay out all of your jute pieces in their approximate position on the floor, lining up corners and sides as best as possible. Using one strand at a time (or two strands twisted together), tie each piece to another at each corner using a knot similar to those used by sailors (see Resources). This will help keep the rug together while you work.
Begin tying knots around each individual piece of jute at regular intervals along each side: Every 5 inches or so is a good place to start; just make sure that each knot is tight enough so it won’t unravel later on! As you work from side to side, be sure to alternate between left-side and right-side knots so that your rug.
As you tie, occasionally check the size and shape of your rug.
A good rug can transform a room, but it’s not always easy to know what size to buy.
This video from the Home Depot walks you through the process of measuring your rugs and carpets. As you tie, occasionally check the size and shape of your rug. It’s better to have a little extra material than not enough.
The video also shows how to stretch out the rug if it has wrinkles or folds in it.
Once you have tied all of the knots, you can begin to shape your rug. Begin by gently pulling on one corner of the rug. If there are any loose ends or knots, adjust them before proceeding.
Once you have pulled on one corner, pull on another until the entire rug is shaped into a rectangle. If you find that your rug is too small, untie one knot at a time and add another tie in its place.
If your rug has become misshapen or unevenly sized, simply untie one knot at a time and rebind them together in a new configuration.
Making a rag rug is easy and fun.
Making a rag rug is easy and fun. You can use old clothes, towels, sheets or blankets to make a rag rug. Start by cutting up the items into small pieces. If you are using a sewing machine, set it to a zigzag stitch that is about 1/4 inch wide with no top or bottom thread. If you are hand sewing, use an overcast stitch or blanket stitch.
The easiest way to sew the rags together is to tie them in groups of three or four together with string or yarn and then sew them together at the same time. It’s best to use thick yarn as it will hold up better than thin thread when you are pulling on it while sewing your rag rug.
Start by sewing several pairs of rags together into strips so that they are all connected in the same direction and then sew them onto a backing material such as canvas or muslin. When you have enough strips sewn together, turn them over so that they are facing outward from each other and start sewing them onto the backing material in rows like bricks on a wall until all of your rags have been sewn together into one large piece of fabric.
