This is the method I used to break my u lock. It’s not very expensive, takes about 10 seconds and you don’t need any special tools. However, it’s also very dangerous.
All you need is an angle grinder and a small screwdriver. I got mine at Harbor Freight for $50. Here’s how to do it:
1) Find a scrap piece of metal that will fit in your u lock and wedge it in between the shackle and the lock body. This will keep the lock from spinning but allow you to break through the side of your u lock with ease. (I used a 2×4.)
2) Insert screwdriver into keyhole of u lock (there are instructions on how to do this all over YouTube). Once you feel like you’ve got a good grip on the keyhole, begin turning while pushing forward on the handlebars or pulling back on them depending on which direction you’re facing when starting out (remember, your bike is now upside down). Make sure that when you start turning, there’s no slack in your chain — otherwise it may come off its sprocket when trying to turn it back into place once

I bought this set because I’ve got a few bikes with cable locks on them. I’m not worried about someone stealing my bike, but when I leave it at work overnight (or even during the day), there are always people who need to use the rack and they’ll take my bike if there is nothing else around. This will give me peace of mind as well as some recourse if someone does decide to take my bike while I’m gone.
The set comes with four different picks and a tension wrench (which is basically a cheater bar). There’s also a pick holder that holds all of your picks in one place (instead of having them roll around in your pocket). The picks themselves are pretty standard fare – nothing fancy here, just sturdy metal ones that aren’t flimsy at all!
